8.c. A Major Basics – Scales, Arpeggios and Triads for Grade 2

Posted on April 9, 2025April 23, 2025 by Helena Papapostolou

Another major we will study is the A Major scale. A Major starts from the note A and write the notes in order, up to A an octave higher.

First, we notice that E-F interval is a natural semitone. To form the major scale, we observe that the interval C-D is a tone, but for the major scale, we need it to be a semitone. Therefore, we raise C (the 3rd degree of the scale) by a semitone with a sharp, making it C#. Next, we raise F by a semitone with a sharp, making it F#. F# and G is semitone so we raise G with a sharp, making G# and the next degrees 7th and 8th is a semitone! Thus, in the A Major scale, we have three sharps: F#, C#, G# the key signature of the scale!
